Dr Helen Barrie is a senior research fellow at the University of South Australia, in the Centre for Markets, Values and Inclusion, where she is leader of the inclusion stream. Helen has a PhD in human geography and her research over the past 15 years has focussed on the influence of population change on our societies and how we meet those challenges. Much of this work involves an examination of the interaction and interplay of people and the built environment.
Helen works in multidisciplinary teams both in academia and with industry at local and global scales, with a focus on the social value of good design, placemaking and wellbeing, urbanism and spatial justice, and innovative models of housing and neighbourhoods that foster belonging. Recent projects include a four-year Australian Research Council Linkage Project partnered with Uniting Communities South Australia, the Australian Institute of Architects South Australian Chapter and Professor Flora Samuel, professor of architecture at Cambridge University, exploring the social value of good design in extreme mixed-use buildings.
